“대학다니는 아이가 학교에서 받는 돈도 세금보고를해야하나요?”--->It depends; your child doesn’t need to report his/her scholarship as taxable income on his/her return as long as he/she is a full-time or part-time candidate for a degree at a primary, secondary or accredited post-secondary institution; the award covers tuition and fees to enroll in or attend an educational institution; the award covers fees, books, supplies and equipment required for your courses. HOWEVER, your child’s scholarship/fellowship is taxed if it is used to cover his/her room and board ;travel ;research ;clerical help ;ed. equipment,i.e, laptop/ computer or etc. If your child’s award, for example, covers both tuition and room and board, the amount he/she uses for tuition is tax-free, while the amount he/she uses for room and board is taxable. If you need to make this adjustment, you may have to adjust other parts of your return as well. For example, if you are filing a deduction for educational expenses, you must reduce the amount of your deduction by the tax-free amount of the award.
“ 금액은 한해에 총 12000불 정도 되는데요 일 해서 받는것이아니고 학기시작할때 나오더라구요 학비포함 19000불정도입니다 .”-----> As described above,I do not think so.However, it depends. If your child’s only income is a tax-free scholarship or fellowship, your child is in the clear. Your child doesn’t have to file a tax return or report the award. On the other hand, if all or part of your child’s scholarship is taxable and if that money is not recorded on your child’s W2 form, your child must report it: If your child is filing a 1040EZ form, he/ she needs to print “SCH” and the taxable amount to the right of the words W-2 form on line 1.For the 1040 or 1040A forms, your child needs to write “SCH” and the taxable amount on the dotted line next to line 7 on the 1040 or in the space to the left of line 7 on the 1040A.
“작년에도 안했는데 해야한다면 올해것과 같이하면 되나요?”---->As said above, as long as your child’s scholarship is taxable, then he/she needs to file his/her return to report it on his/her return, OK?? Do you claim your child as your dependent on your return??? Even though your child is claimed as your dependent on your return, your child , as a dependent, needs to file his/her return as long as his/her unearned income(interest or dividend income) was over $950 or his/her earned income(i.e., salaries/ wages/ tips or etc ) was over $5,700 OR his/her gross income was more than the larger of $950(unearned income) or his/her earned income(up to $5mm,400)+$300.
